Sermon Recap - Barriers to Breakthrough

Gospel of John: Barriers of Breakthrough

This week we studied John 5, where a man lame for 38 years is confronted by Jesus, not just with healing, but with the offer of true wholeness.

1. The Pain of Prolonged Suffering

The man is unnamed, defined only by his condition. The 38 years of suffering likely affected not just his body, but his mind, soul, and relationships. Long-term pain creates coping mechanisms, isolation, and bitterness. Many people today also live with long seasons of physical, emotional, or spiritual suffering.

2. Jesus Asks a Strange Question: “Do You Want to Be Well?” (John 5:6)

Jesus sees and knows us fully. He knows our history and pain. Healing is not just about the physical. Jesus wants to make us whole (sozo): saved, healed, and restored. This question exposes barriers, excuses, and hidden beliefs. Like in marriage counseling: wanting change isn’t the same as doing the work of change.

3. Barriers to Breakthrough

Barrier 1: Comfort in the Familiar

  • -Pain can become our “new normal.” We adapt and trust our coping mechanisms more than God.
  • -Real healing often requires letting go of what we’ve grown used to.
  • -True belief requires full trust, not leaning on our own understanding (Prov. 3:5–6).

Barrier 2: False Belief in Limited Solutions

  • -The man believed there was only one way to be healed—through the stirred waters.
  • -He relied on others and was repeatedly disappointed.
  • -Jesus rarely heals the same way twice. Breakthrough isn’t a method; it’s through Jesus.
  • -We must be willing to hear and follow His voice, even if it’s different than before.

Barrier 3: Unbelief

  • -Jesus asks the man to do the impossible: rise and walk.
  • -The man responds in faith, and is immediately healed (John 5:8–9).
  • -Faith isn’t wishful thinking; it’s confidence and conviction rooted in God’s Word.

4. What Is Faith?

  • -Faith = the title deed of what we hope for, a guarantee of ownership in Christ.
  • -True faith is built on what God says, not on what we see.
  • -Jesus didn't touch the man; he was healed by the Word and his obedient faith.

5. Final Warning: Don’t Return to Sin

  • -Jesus later tells the man: “Stop sinning or something worse may happen” (John 5:14).
  • -Not all suffering is caused by sin, but some is, especially unbelief.
  • -Sin destroys; repentance and trust in Jesus bring life and wholeness.

Are you ready to be made well? What’s holding you back: comfort, coping mechanisms, unbelief, or sin? Today is the day to trust Jesus fully, repent and turn back to Him, and believe He has given you a breakthrough in faith.
