Day One - "Feet"
“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from supper, and laid aside His garments and taking a towel, He girded Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.”
—John 13:3-5
Our lives can be messy. Our feet get dirty. And it’s easy to think our mess is our problem to manage. We may feel we must bear the consequences of our actions as penance to God.
Peter says to Jesus, “You will never wash my feet.” Why? Because as humans, we often believe that we are our mess—and that God Most High is too holy to get caught up in our filth.
But Jesus responded, “Peter, if I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
In other words, Jesus wasn’t washing His disciple’s feet as a one-time gesture of affection before the
cross. He was revealing something deeper: “This is who I am and how I act.”
God is the Supreme Teacher. But the character of our Teacher is Humble Servant. The Creator’s Spirit is self-sacrificing love, compassion, and grace. He is the God who comes close—lowly and gentle with us, even before we ask.
We are not a problem Jesus must fix. He teaches us to tenderly hold and care for our own humanity.
When we welcome Jesus into the process of our lives, everything begins to change.
We give Him our feet—not just once, but again and again—trusting that He’s not doing us a favor, but
showing us the way of love. When we meet His eyes, we find kindness. A kindness that leads us to
repentance and draws us into deeper wholeness.
As we are changed, we begin to serve others. Not to remove dirt or perform a duty, but because giving has become part of who we are. We serve as an offering—a gift of connection, understanding, and growth.
Reflection:
● What area of your life is Jesus coming close to wash with His grace and love?
● What part of His presence is He revealing to you that you may not have noticed before?
● What beliefs about yourself—or about Him—is He undoing?
● What truth is He speaking over your heart that you can carry into your relationships and give as grace to others?
